The East Village was the center of a counterculture movement in New York in the 1980s. Currently, it houses everything from libraries (New York Public Library, Fales Library), museums (New Museum of Contemporary Art, Museum of Jewish Heritage), to theaters and arts centers (Amato Opera, Nuyorican Poets Cafe) and music venues. There are pre-war walkups and the occasional new luxury high rise amidst authentic restaurants and nightlife on almost every block.
